The Vikings come to Beaumont Hospital School

Spread the love

Our most recent project is all about the Vikings. Here in Beaumont Hospital School we decided to

try and find out as much information as we could about the Vikings, and explore whether they

really did deserve such a bad reputation!

Our first piece of work was put together by Ana. She made up some Power Point slides with some of the main points that she learnt about the Vikings.

Where did the Vikings come from?

The Vikings came from the three countries of Scandinavia: Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

How did the Vikings explore?

Many Vikings sailed all over Europe and the North Atlantic Ocean. Some Vikings were raiders who attacked and stole from the people they came across. The Vikings were brilliant ship builders. They build strong, beautiful ships that could move quickly through the water.

Who was in charge?

Most Viking countries had a King who ruled over everyone. Next came the Earls and Chieftains who were also important leaders. Most men were ordinary Freemen who were farmers and craftsmen. Slaves were not free people. They belonged to a master.

Norse gods and goddesses

Vikings had many different gods. They had stories for each of them.

1:Odin was the wise and mysterious. He was the ruler of the gods.

2:Thor was the most popular god. He ruled the skies, storms and thunder and protected ordinary people.

3:Loki was the mischievous, dangerous trickster god.

Rune Stones

The Vikings had their own alphabet. These were called runes. Runes were often carved into stones as a memorial to a person or a special event. Rune stones were usually large boulders and were often decorated with black, red, blue and white paint.

One of our Post-Primary Students made a Viking Longship out of cardboard. Here are a few pictures of her project as it developed.

This is the template she used for the body of the ship.

The template for the Dragon heads.

The finished product!

Ryan and Adam both in 2nd Class worked together to make a large Viking Longship that we could display on our noticeboard.

This is a short Photo Story of their work so far.

We decided to make a sail for our Viking Longship. It is a big project and various students have contributed to it. Here are a few of the photos of our work in progress.

We were learning about how the Vikings used clay and wooden dishes. So one of our students decided to make two lovely clay Viking pots.

Mathew and Kassia Belle researched loads of information on the Vikings and put together two lovely booklet projects.
